Beyond Skin Dermatology understands that acne is among those skin conditions that takes a tremendous emotional and physical toll. Our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Sang Kim, prioritizes personalized acne care. By tailoring treatment to your skin and needs, Dr. Kim can help you to effectively and quickly put acne behind you. So, you can move forward and enjoy life on your own terms, without this condition holding you back.
Below are four treatment options available at our Aurora, Colorado clinic that may be recommended based on the type and severity of your acne:
Dermatologist-approved products to try first, or for milder acne, might include cleansers and gels formulated with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Such formulations kill bacteria, control oil production, and exfoliate the skin. Dr. Kim may also recommend non-comedogenic makeup and hair care products, as well as skincare techniques that minimize the risk of irritation and pore blockage.
In addition to product recommendations, our professionals offer in-office procedures to clear acne and prevent complications such as scarring and skin damage. Sometimes, these procedures may also be used to effectively treat complications such as scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots). For instance, Dr. Kim can customize the depth of chemical peels to treat mild to moderate acne and acne scars. Peels work for acne by resurfacing the skin, removing dead cells that build up on the surface, and clogging your pores. When pores become clogged with old skin cells, dirt, and other impurities, they become a breeding ground for acne breakouts. Other in-office services, such as facials and extractions, may be appropriate to safely clear clogged pores.
Note: You should always trust extractions to the professionals. Taking a “DIY” approach can make acne worse, contributing to increased inflammation as well as an increased risk of infection and scars.
The wide range of medications prescribed by professionals like Dr. Kim is stronger than anything available at your local drugstore or online. These medications generally work in one of two ways. Topical medications, for one, are applied to the skin. They fight bacteria and soothe inflammation. Systemic medications, including antibiotics, work throughout the body and also help with oil production.

When acne doesn’t respond to other treatments, Dr. Kim may prescribe isotretinoin. You may know this medication by the brand name, Accutane®. This powerful drug may be appropriate for severe acne, including nodules and cysts. It works by reducing oil, preventing clogged pores, and minimizing inflammation. While effective and associated with sustained acne clearance, Accutane® use must be supervised by a qualified dermatologist due to known side effects.
We look forward to meeting you! Sustained acne clearance begins with a skin evaluation. Call (720) 213-4679 to schedule your consultation at Beyond Skin Dermatology in Aurora, CO today.
